Chapter 5

Spiritualism

St. Augustine resident and talented artist Irene Allemano encountered the spirit world while living in Mexico. She wasn’t planning to become involved in the field, but she saw an ad for a course in Kirlian photography, the photographic art that shows an energy field around a real object such as a leaf. Her interest in this photography resulted in an introduction to John Lovette, a British trance medium.

Irene joined his classes and began an unusual metaphysical journey. John Lovette taught what Irene described as courses in self-development. She said they started with simple exercises designed to increase awareness of paranormal psychic ability. John always began classes with a quiet-time reading, a selection of poetry, or excerpts from inspirational works.

The students were then given exercises to increase their innate abilities. One of the early tasks was for each student to analyze the contents of a sealed paper bag for ten minutes. Irene didn’t fare well with that one. She doesn’t remember what was in her bag. Some students were successful, however, and Irene said she was beginning to understand the focus of the classes.

In a later class, her assignment was to focus on the man beside her. The students were told to see what they could learn about a person simply by thinking. Irene said, “I tried to pick up something, but I couldn’t get anything. All I could see in my mind’s eye was a collection of the paintings by the French artist Georges Rouault (1871–1958).”

She said John’s instructions were, “No matter how silly you think it is, just talk about what you have sensed by thinking.”

When it was her turn to speak she told the group she couldn’t focus. All she could see were Rouault paintings.

In great surprise the man responded, “I have a collection of Rouault paintings, and I’m planning to write about him.”

Irene finally understood. “I get it. You can pick up on something. I thought it was some big earth-shaking information that would be revealed, but it can be anything.”

She understood from that experience that one can learn from the smaller visions as well as those one reads about as “earth-shaking.”

The group was working well together, and after about a year John said that because their energy field had become so well coordinated they were ready to see demonstrations. He never gave demonstrations of paranormal activity for the general public, but felt this group was prepared.

He told them all to construct cardboard cones like megaphones to bring to the next gathering. The spirit guides were going to demonstrate “direct voice,” which, Irene explained, was a voice coming from “the other side.”

They were told to prepare the cones and line them with strips of luminous tape. They did as requested and met at the assigned time. Irene said, “We all put our cones on the floor and prepared ourselves by clearing our minds.” She explained that John read meditations, and they sang. Then John entered a trance state. She said he left his body, which was then entered by his principal spirit guide, Grey Feather.
